Zero-Sugar Game-Day Snacks for November Football

Game day has a snack problem. The table is built for grazing, and grazing is where sugar hides: the candy bowl, the sweet chili sauce, the chips you did not mean to eat a whole bag of. The fix is a spread with the same crunch and heat and salt, minus the sugar. Four snacks, one table, nobody asking which ones are diet food.

Buffalo Cauliflower Bites

The spicy, crunchy centerpiece. Use fresh cauliflower, not frozen — frozen florets release too much water and the coating turns soggy no matter what you do.

  • Toss: fresh cauliflower florets in buffalo sauce mixed with melted butter. The butter mellows the heat and helps the sauce cling.

  • Coat: roll each floret in lupin meal, with about half a teaspoon of garlic powder mixed in. Lupin meal crisps like cornmeal with a fraction of the carbs. Crushed pork rinds work too, and come out even crunchier.

  • Cook: air fry at 375°F for 12 to 15 minutes, giving every floret space so they fry instead of steam. No air fryer? Bake at 400°F on a wire rack for 12 to 15 minutes. Serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing.

Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers

The snack that disappears first, every time. Twenty-four poppers from one batch, and the filling can be prepped a day ahead.

  • Fill: mix 8 ounces softened cream cheese with 1/2 cup shredded cheddar, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, and salt and pepper.

  • Stuff and wrap: halve 12 jalapeños lengthwise and remove the seeds and ribs — wear gloves, the oils linger. Spoon in the filling and wrap each half with a half slice of bacon, 12 slices total.

  • Bake: 400°F for 20 minutes, until the jalapeños are tender and the bacon is fully cooked. Broil 2 to 3 minutes at the end for extra-crispy bacon. Leave some seeds in if you want more heat.

Cheese Crisps and Dips

The crunch and the creamy, with almost no work at all. Bake small piles of shredded cheese until crisp for crackers that carry about 2 grams of carbs per serving, and set them out with guacamole or a spinach artichoke dip. Add cucumber slices with everything bagel seasoning for a cool, crunchy contrast that costs you nothing.

The Spread Plan

  • Something spicy: the buffalo cauliflower. Something savory: the poppers. Something crunchy: the cheese crisps. Something cool: the dips and cucumbers.

  • Prep ahead: the popper filling keeps a day in the fridge, and the cauliflower coating holds up even after sitting out for a while. Bake the poppers fresh and the table takes care of itself.

  • Drink plan: sparkling water with a zero-sugar syrup keeps a glass in everyone's hand without a sugar crash by halftime.

Bottom line: feed the crowd, skip the sugar. Nobody at the table needs to know which snacks

are sugar-free, because none of them taste like a compromise.
