Unwind: The "Calm Drink" That Just Landed at Walmart

Every few years the beverage industry decides we all need to be more wired. Energy drinks, pre-workout everything, caffeine stacked on caffeine. Well, the pendulum just swung the other way — and the guys pushing it are the ones who built a $100 million THC drink brand.
Meet Unwind.
What It Is
Unwind is a new sparkling "Calm Drink" from Justin Tidwell and Anthony Puterman — the founders of Nowadays, the THC beverage company that scaled past $100 million in sales in about three and a half years. They launched Unwind on October 1 in roughly 1,000 Walmart stores nationwide, plus TikTok Shop, with more retailers coming in early 2027.
The pitch is simple: a 12-ounce sparkling drink for when you want to take the edge off, not rev up. Zero caffeine. The functional ingredients are magnesium L-threonate (the Magtein form, the one actually studied for brain and sleep support) and L-theanine (the amino acid in green tea behind that calm-but-clear feeling).
Five flavors: Berry, Cherry, Citrus, Tropical, and Spicy Lime. $2.79 a can, $10.99 for a four-pack.
Why A Sugar-Free Dad Is Paying Attention
The evening wind-down slot is a real gap in the sugar-free world. Your options after dinner have basically been: herbal tea (fine, but not exciting), a diet soda (caffeine, and it tastes like decisions), or sparkling water (wet air, fight me). An alcohol-free, caffeine-free sparkling drink built for relaxing — that is a category worth watching.
Magnesium L-threonate is also a legitimately interesting pick. Most cheap magnesium in drinks is magnesium citrate or oxide — fine for muscles, not much for the brain. L-threonate is the form researchers have actually studied for sleep and cognitive support. Pairing it with L-theanine is a thoughtful formula, not just "we put magnesium in a can."
The Sugar Question — Let's Be Honest
Here is the part you need to hear straight: Unwind is "low sugar," not zero sugar. The company's launch materials say low sugar and low calories, but they did not publish exact grams in the announcement.
For this audience, that distinction matters. "Low sugar" could mean 2 grams or 8 grams, and those are very different drinks for someone counting every gram. So here is my dad-advice: when you see it at Walmart, flip the can and read the label before it goes in the cart. If it is 2–3 grams, that is a reasonable wind-down treat.
If it is pushing double digits, it is a dessert, not a daily drink.
I will update this post if the nutrition numbers land. For now: promising, but verify.
The Dad Take
I like the trend here more than any single can. First it was prebiotic sodas going mainstream. Then Coca-Cola started putting fiber in Coke Zero. Now a $100-million beverage team is betting that people want to drink something that helps them relax instead of something that wires them up.
The sugar-free life keeps getting less lonely. The options are not just multiplying — they are getting smarter, with actual functional ingredients instead of just "now with 50% less sugar" slapped on the same old soda.
Unwind is worth a look the next time you are at Walmart. Read the label, pick a flavor that sounds good (Spicy Lime has my attention), and report back. If the sugar number is right, this could be the new evening ritual.
Stay sugar-free out there.
