5 Sugar-Free Grocery Finds to Grab This October

Oct 2
5 min read

October shelves are turning creepy, orange, and suspiciously pumpkin-flavored. I went

looking for the ones a sugar-free shopper can actually get excited about — here are five

worth your cart space this month.

October is the one month where the grocery store feels like a theme park for everyone else — candy displays at the door, pumpkin-flavored everything at every turn — and a bit like an

obstacle course for the rest of us. So this month I went down the aisles (and a few retailer

websites) collecting the items that are actually worth your cart. Five real products: a trick-or-

treat solved, a personal stash covered, your coffee fixed, and two pantry anchors that don't know what season it is and don't care.

One note before we walk the aisles: a couple of these are drastically-lower-sugar rather than

zero-sugar. My filter is the usual dad rule — if the label lets you have the thing without the sugar bomb, it made the list.

1. SmartSweets Halloween Mini Sweet Fish — the better handout

If you read our sugar-free Halloween guide, you know SmartSweets dressed up its lineup for the holiday this year: reskinned Gummy Worms and Sour Zombie Buddies at 3 grams of sugar per 50-gram bag. But the find that makes this month's list is the Mini Sweet Fish — the first SmartSweets Halloween bag actually sized for handing out. It's a box of 24 smaller snack bags, each at 19 grams, 50 calories, and one single gram of sugar.

One gram of sugar is the kind of math that lets the trick-or-treat bowl stay seasonal without

requiring you to eat your feelings afterward. They look like little cups of gummies, taste close

enough to the classic cherry-and-red-fish experience that no kid writes you a letter, and a whole box keeps your porch bowl looking the part. Boxes are sitting in Target's Halloween section for $19.99, which works out to about 83 cents a handout.

Where to grab it: SmartSweets.com product page, or search Target's Halloween section.

2. David Pumpkin Spice Gold Bars — fall flavor, 0g sugar

The most on-theme bar of the season is back. David's Pumpkin Spice Gold Bar runs 28 grams of protein in a 150-calorie bar with zero sugar — spiced pumpkin-flavored dough with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg, plus airy crisps and white-chocolate-flavored chunks. It went out to stores on August 24 in limited fall stock, so October is the window to grab it.

The numbers genuinely look different from most protein bars of the same size: 75% of the bar's calories come from protein, from a milk protein isolate, collagen, and whey blend. It reads more like a seasoned snack than a meal replacement, which is exactly the brief I wanted: pumpkin spice things I can eat without my glucose sensor having an opinion. Also worth noting — the box price at Amazon is $39 for 12, but it's showing up at Walmart, Target, Kroger, and The Vitamin Shoppe, so comparison-shop the singles.

Where to grab it: the brand site, Amazon, and the four major retailers above.

3. Torani Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice Syrup — the coffee fix

Between October 1 and Halloween, a truly unreasonable number of my morning thoughts are about lattes I can't order. Torani's Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice is the annual honorable exit: the 12.7-ounce café bottle runs $7.99 at torani.com, zero calories and zero sugar, with the

cinnamon-nutmeg-clove background doing what it does. Splenda-sweetened, so your mileage on sweeteners applies as usual — keep one bottle on the counter and another parked in the desk drawer at work.

Two labels to know about. The smaller bottle is sold as Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice; the bigger

retail 750 mL glass bottle is the same flavor line sold as Sugar Free Pumpkin Pie. And if you live the clean-label life, Torani's Puremade Zero Sugar Pumpkin Spice bottle swaps Splenda for monk fruit and stevia leaf extract — it's marketed to cafés, so it's mostly restaurant-supply buy-in, but it exists for the ingredient-conscious.

Where to grab it: the 375ml bottle at torani.com ( $7.99 ), Amazon, Walmart's syrup aisle, or the Puremade Zero Sugar line.

4. ChocZero Mini Oasis Bars — the stash for grown-ups

The Halloween guide recommended keeping your own stash at the door while the kids get the handouts. This is what goes in the grown-up stash. ChocZero's Mini Oasis Bars come 16 to a box, each half-ounce bar milk chocolate with shredded coconut and an almond center — think the coconut bar slot of the candy aisle, with zero added sugar and no maltitol-style jingle-jangles at 2 a.m.

The sweetener story is what keeps me buying this one: monk fruit, no sugar alcohols, no

artificial sweeteners, and fiber-heavy enough — about 8 grams per serving with only 2 grams net carbs — that a couple minis reads as a snack instead of a regret. Individually wrapped so the box at the front door you are not sharing with anyone survives until November without drying out.

Where to grab it: the 16-count box on Amazon, or directly through ChocZero's site — the Oasis line is the one in the teal box, and yes, the purple-and-teal packaging is doing a Halloween audition every year now.

5. RXBAR Classic 12G — sweetened with dates, not sugar

October needs one item that doesn't expire with the holiday, so here's the pantry anchor.

RXBAR Classic 12G bars are just five ingredients — egg whites for protein, dates to bind it all

together, and nuts for texture — delivering 12 grams of protein, about 5 grams of fiber, and zero grams of added sugar in about 200 calories. The wrapper does the transparent thing with 3 Egg Whites, 6 Almonds, 4 Cashews, 2 Dates, No B.S., — which is the label pitch that launched a thousand protein bars.

The honest caveat, which our readers already know: dates still bring natural sugar to the party, around 13 grams total on the Chocolate Sea Salt label, so if "no sugar" on your plan means dietary-total, read the label the way we always do. If it means no added sugar, this is the bar that keeps the streak alive, at every grocery and bulk store on the planet, with a sticky chew that'll keep you out of the Halloween bowl for a full hour.

Where to grab it: RXBAR's listings on Amazon, or Costco's 14-count variety box with full nutrition label posted.

The honest fine print

Three notes, from me to your pantry:

  • First: prices and stock are what I could verify today; October is peak leaf-peeper shopping season and the Halloween-specific stuff sells through fast — if the Target shelf is empty, the SmartSweets site tends to hold stock longer.

  • Second: none of this is medical advice, and if your kid eats all 24 Mini Sweet Fish, the CDC does not have a hotline for that (I checked).

  • Third: if you find a better October find than these five, the comments are open and I take product tips.

October's shortlist, saved for the phone

For the shopping-list screenshot crowd, here's the month in five items:

  • SmartSweets Halloween Mini Sweet Fish — 24 handout-size bags, 1g sugar each; $19.99 at Target's Halloween section.

  • David Pumpkin Spice Gold Bars — 28g protein, 0g sugar, limited fall stock; $39/12ct at the brand site, singles at Walmart/Target/Kroger.

  • Torani Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice Syrup — $7.99 café bottle, Splenda-sweetened; Puremade. Zero Sugar is the monk fruit alternative.

  • ChocZero Mini Oasis Bars — 16 minis, milk chocolate/coconut/almond, no added sugar monk fruit only.

  • RXBAR Classic 12G — dates, egg whites, nuts; 12g protein, 0g added sugar; Costco's variety box is the best-buy bet.

That's this month's haul. Go forth, shop smart, and may your trick-or-treat bowl be full and your glucose line flat — I'll be back next month with whatever November brings, probably

cranberries.
